A Dull Complete Works, Artist Statement

We don’t often concern about daily things because they are too familiar. Actually we are not really conscious of the things that we are used to. But most of the small or big problems we have in our life start from these daily things that we do not recognize.

They are just stories of yesterday that already passed, today which is not special and vague tomorrow. Thinking this way, our life is similar to this. Getting angry about a petty matter, having a childish infatuation, getting impressed or getting sad about triviality.....

A Dull Complete Works is about our important life that can seem trivial because of its familiarity. I want to think the meaning of the life through this work. The aim is to collect dull stories of ordinary people and arrange them, and make a collective works out of them.

New Sinsin Photo Studio, Artist Statement

NewShinShin Sajinkwan was inspired by the Sinsin Studio/Wedding Hall in Masan area where the biennale is held. The team members will each provide unique interpretations towards this photo studio/wedding hall, and the end results will be shown at the first floor of Shinshin building. Shinshin Photo Studio was, initially, a small photo studio built in the late 1960’s, but developed into a now grand Shinshin Building which holds a photo studio and a wedding hall. The founder of this place is the photographer, Mr. Baek Naksam who has worked here, and has literally witnessed the history of Masan for five decades. Mr. Baek devoted his whole life to Shinshin studio, and even though he is 84 years old, he starts his day by cleaning the studio and waits for the people to come in to take a photo. NewShinShin Sajinkwan will include the study and research on the life of Mr. Baek, his Shinshin Studio, and also on the Masan area. Four artists had teamed up together to make NewShinShin Sajinkwan inside Shinshin Studio, and a new space will be made. (NewShinShinSa- jinkwan)

Mr. Baek Naksam survived many wars with empty hands and naked fists to support his family and his business. I know that all the people who went through that era worked so hard like him, but this is a statement which underestimates his efforts and ordeals that he had to go through. I was under an impression that he was constantly trying to prove himself within the space that he had established and built. He displayed all medals including the presidential one, press scripts that covered himself and his photo studio along with all his other achievements. All these were constantly telling the visitors of his life story that is full of vicissitudes, tumultuous histories and ups and downs. All these evoked very strange feelings inside me along with very special impressions, which eventually led me to ask myself what life is for a real man, and for a strong person, and what the meaning of power and strength is. Hence, with my works, I will do my best to try to answer these questions which I could not solve with my immature brain and logic.
