이 사진들은 사진과 공간이 프레임을 매개로 나누어지는 익숙한 사진의 구조에서 벗어나 ‘한 공간이 담긴 사진과 다른 공간’의 공존이 만들어내는 새로운 사진의 공간과 물성에 대한 시도이다. 본 작업은 지상의 바닥을 기준으로 나누어진 공간의 구조를 실재와 이미지가 결합된 새로운 형태의 공간으로 만들어 나간다. 스위스 대사관의 공간은 땅을 기준으로 그 특성이 급격히 변화한다. 지하와 지상은 공간을 형성하는 벽과 바닥, 그곳에 놓인 시설까지 모두 상반된 물성을 갖고 있다. (지상의 매끄럽고 부드러운 정돈된 질감과 달리 지하는 어둡고 거칠며 다듬어지지 않았 다.) 지상 층은 거주지와 일터로서 기능하고 지하는 건물의 유지 보수를 위한 시설이 밀집된다. 기능은 장소의 쓸모를 구분 짓고 각각의 분위기를 만들어 간다. 나는 땅 밑에 매복 되어 통제되는 지하에 집중하며 위치적, 기능적으로 구분된, 이분법적 구조를 변형시키고 쉽게 보이지 않는 지하의 공간을 사진을 통해 지상의 공간으로 끌어 올려서 결합된 형태의 새 공간을 시도하였다.
These photographs explore the physical boundaries of photography by breaking away from conventional arrangements, where the exhibition space merely accommodates for a series of frames. Instead, there is a sense of interaction between the spaces which the photographs portray and the space in which they are displayed. By virtue of the spatial division between underground and overground, reality and representation start to blend together. Moreover, the building of the Swiss Embassy itself undergoes a spatial metamorphosis. The walls, the floors and even the facilities, jointly providing spaces above ground as well as below, show contrasting physical properties. We generally find things above ground to be smooth, gentle and polished, whereas underground things are dark, rough and unrefined. We live and work on ground level, whilst the basement is used to store maintenance equipment. Each place derives its use from its function, conjuring up a distinctive atmosphere. This newly created space focuses on the subdued, restrained nature of underground spaces, transforming the spatial and functional dichotomy with all that is overground. In doing so, this exhibition brings the underground spaces up to ground level and merges them into one.
작업 ‘평평한 방(2022)’ 는 사진의 평면성을 실재 공간으로 확장하기 위한 시도이다.작업 ‘평평한 방(2022)’ 은 사진에 찍힌 장소가 곧 사진이 있는 장소이며, 사진에 찍힌 피사체가 곧 지금 눈 앞에 있는 대상이다. 사진과 실재 공간을 연결하고 있는 대상은 사진의 안과 밖에 함께 위치하며, 사진 속 공간과 현실의 공간을 연결하고 단절한다. 작업 ‘평평한 방(2022)’ 은 실재 공간과 대상/ 이미지 속 공간과 대상을 연결하는 동시에 단절하며 사진의 평면성에 대한 확장을 시도한다.
The work ‘Flat Room (2022)’ which is produced in the exhibition space, is an attempt to expand the flatness of the photography into the real space. In the work, the place where the photo was taken, is the place where the photo is. And the object in the photo is the same object which is placed out of the photo. The objects, that lead inside and outside of the photos, expand the flatness of the photography. Through This Work I tried to combine and conflict the real place with place in the Image at the same time.
작업 ‘80g(2022)’ 은 대상과 그것이 기록된 종이의 관계를 새롭게 바라보기 위한 시도이다. 입체의 대상을 사진을 통해 기록할 때 사진은 대상의 고유한 물성을 제거하며, 시각적 정보만을 단편적으로 전달한다. 이 과정에서 전달하는 매개체인 종이는 이미지 아래로 자신을 감춘다. 모든 사진들에 공통적으로 사용된 80g 무게의 종이 - 평면성을 넘어서는- 를 통해 나는 이미지 이면에 감추어진 종이의 물성을 적극적으로 드러내고자 한다.
작업은 현대 도시 건축에 사용되는 자재들을 사진의 대상으로 한다. 도시와 건축의 기본 목적은 “무너지지 않기” 이다. 이를 위해 사용되는 차갑고 견고한 재료들은 중력을 거스르며 무거운 무게를 지탱하기 위해 선택된다. 콘크리트, 철근, 알루미늄, 강철등 모든 선택된 재료들은 고정된 형태없이 그것이 지닌 물성의 기능을 통해 활용된다.
‘80g’ 을 통해 나는 프린트된 사진을 다양한 방식으로 설치 촬영하며 새로운 종이를 통해 대상에 새로운 물성을 부여한다. 작업에서 보여지는 프린트되지 못한 종이의 뒷면과 주름들, 무게를 이기지 못해 늘어진 형태는 그곳에 기록된 견고함과 함께 이미지 뒤편의 가벼움을 보여준다.
‘80g (2022)’ is the work attempts to look a new relationship between the object and the paper where it is captured. In this work I concentrate on the material that makes space and city When capturing object through photography the photograph delivers only visual information excluding most of Characteristic of the object. In this process, paper, as a medium for delivering visual information, hide themselves under the image. I actively reveal the physical properties of the paper hidden under the image through the work ‘80g’.
The work borrows images of materials used in cities and architecture. The basic purpose of cities and architecture is “not to collapse”. The materials used for this are chosen to withstand gravity and to support the heavy weight. Concrete, rebar, aluminum, steel, Etc...
It functions through its physical properties not with certain fixed form. I installed printed photos in various ways and take picture of them and make a new formability using the characteristics of paper. The back of the printed paper, the unprinted part, wrinkles, and the shape of the paper hangs down because it cannot withstand the weight. They show the hardness and the lightness(80g) at the same time.
