New-Family Portrait

When I enter my house, a large family portrait of my family come in at first sight. I felt contradictory every time I look at the family portrait that looks like a ideal happy family. A family portrait shows how a family is formed, but because of the stereotype of family portrait, it is hard to tell the true relationship of a family. Family portrait is important because it plays the role of bringing the family together. But at the same time, it is meaningless because it seals the true family figure and only shows the ideal family figure.

In the series <New-Family Portrait> I have made a total of 11 different types of families, and 42 participants formed a new family by random drawing lots. Through the contradictory method of recording people who are not real families in the form of a typical family portrait, I tried to talk about the stereotypes and duplicity of ‘family portrait’.

New Korean Family

Korean society has undergone rapid economic and social development since its liberation, and the general form of family has also undergone drastic changes. The series <New Korean Family> was inspired by “Korean Family” by Joo Myung-Duck, who recorded families in the 1970s during the period of change in a large family to the nuclear family in Korea. But when I saw pictures of various forms of family decades ago, I felt that the concept of family has changed, but the stereotypes and roles of family members have not changed much.

In the series <New Korean Family>, I wanted to recreate the family in his photographs which is taken half a century ago, maintaining the composition but with individuals who are not a true family. The final image looks like a real typical family but, all the components including props, background, character, and the relationship is all fiction.
